Snapchill LLC, based in Green Bay, WI, announced a recall of all canned coffee products manufactured by the company that are still within their expiration date.
Deadly Botulinum Toxin
According to the FDA the recall is due to concerns that the current production process could potentially allow for the growth of the deadly botulinum toxin in these low-acid canned foods.
Botulism is a severe form of food poisoning that can cause symptoms such as general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and difficulties with speaking or swallowing.
In severe cases, it can lead to breathing problems, muscle weakness, and abdominal issues.
Symptoms can appear anytime from six hours to two weeks after consuming contaminated food, and anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Nationwide Distribution
The recalled products were distributed across the United States through various coffee roasters, retail locations, and direct online sales from Snapchill.
The issue was discovered when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed Snapchill that their manufacturing process for low-acid canned foods had not been properly filed with the FDA, as required by regulation.
Although no illnesses have been reported and Snapchill is unaware of any instances of botulinum toxin in their products, the company is taking precautionary measures.
Consumer Guidance and Refund Information
The recalled products are sold under various roaster and brand names, in metal cans ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz, and can be identified by the label “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” under the nutrition facts panel or “Snapchill Coffee” on the label.
Consumers are advised to either destroy the products or return them to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a full refund.
Snapchill will provide refunds with appropriate proof of purchase, including a picture of the product before disposal.
