A growing number of Danes are expressing fear of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a recent Megafon poll conducted for Danish television, TV 2.
As the war in Ukraine persists, an increasing proportion of Danes fear its expansion beyond Ukrainian borders. In 2023, 49 percent of respondents either agreed or mostly agreed with concerns about the war spreading.
This figure has risen to 62 percent in 2024.
Furthermore, half of the respondents in the poll expressed fear that the conflict in Ukraine could impact their personal safety in Denmark, TV 2 reports.
Preparedness for War
The rhetoric of war has intensified in neighboring countries as well.
In January, Sweden's top military chief, Michael Bydén, warned the Swedish public about the threat from Russia.
"It is a very serious situation, and the clarity on Sunday was unmistakable. Now, it's about moving from words and understanding to action," Bydén stated on TV4's Nyhetsmorgon, adding that "all Swedes should be ready for war."
However, shortly after this stark warning, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called for calm.
"There is nothing to suggest that war is imminent, but it is quite clear that the risk of war has increased significantly," the Prime Minister said on Swedish Radio, labeling the defense chief's statement as 'exaggerated.'
