More than 200,000 Danes have signed a tongue-in-cheek petition proposing that Denmark should buy California from the United States, poking fun at Donald Trump’s past attempts to purchase Greenland.

The petition, which has gained international attention, argues that Denmark needs more sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates—and what better way to get them than by purchasing California from Trump himself?

"Have you ever looked at a map and wondered what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates. Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a dream come true. Let's buy California from Donald Trump!" the petition declares

The movement is a direct parody of Trump’s controversial 2019 proposal to buy Greenland, a Danish territory. The former U.S. president reportedly suggested using military force if Denmark refused, prompting an international backlash.

Denmark firmly rejected the idea, making it clear that Greenland was not for sale—but now, Danes are flipping the script, offering to purchase California instead.

The petition humorously sweetens the deal by highlighting all the benefits Denmark could bring to the Golden State.

If Denmark were to acquire California, petitioners promise bike paths in Beverly Hills, organic smørrebrød (traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches) on every street corner, and a touch of Scandinavian coziness—hygge—to Hollywood.

The petition also proposes a rebranding of Disneyland to "Hans Christian Andersenland", embracing Denmark’s beloved fairy tale heritage.

"Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet? Yes, thank you," the website states.

Other “selling points” include public healthcare, rule of law, and evidence-based politics, a light jab at California’s well-known political struggles.

An Offer Trump Can’t Refuse?

The petition cheekily suggests that Trump should have no problem selling California, given his longstanding disdain for the state. Trump has frequently criticized California, calling it "the most destroyed state in the U.S."

As an extra incentive, the Danes offer Trump a lifetime supply of wine—a nod to California’s famous vineyards.

And in true Trumpian fashion, the petition jokes that there’s no need to consult Californians on the matter: "If Trump decides to sell California, he will sell it."
