Russia is actively recruiting foreign nationals.

Eight Indian citizens have been killed while fighting for Russia in the ongoing war against Ukraine, according to a statement by Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

Forced Recruitment

Yermak, speaking on Telegram, accused Russia of forcibly recruiting foreign nationals to fight in what he described as an "illegal and unprovoked war" against Ukraine.

He stated that the recruitment often involves deception and pressure, violating international law.

Currently, 63 other Indian citizens are reportedly seeking early release from the Russian military, having been lured into service under false pretenses.

Broader Recruitment Efforts

The recruitment of foreign nationals by Russia is not a new phenomenon.

In April 2023, the British Ministry of Defense, citing intelligence, reported that Russia had been actively recruiting foreigners to join its army.

This effort has been seen as a strategy to avoid unpopular mobilization measures within Russia. Foreign recruits are enticed with promises of a monthly salary of $2,200, an additional payment of $2,000, a Russian passport, free medical care, and training.

By mid-2023, job postings were circulating online specifically targeting citizens of neighboring countries such as Armenia and Kazakhstan, offering monthly wages of $1,973 and enlistment bonuses of $5,140.

Russia has also appealed to migrants from Central Asia, as well as from countries like India and Nepal, to fill its ranks.
