A major emergency operation is underway following an explosion at an explosives manufacturing facility near Cologne on Friday morning, writes Tag24.

A criminal investigation team is currently on-site to determine the cause of the explosion.

The blast occurred around 9:30 a.m., seriously injuring two workers, aged 26 and 62, both from Cologne. According to police spokesman Stefan Birk, while the injuries are severe, their lives are not in danger.

Emergency services, including multiple fire brigade vehicles, ambulances, emergency doctors, and two rescue helicopters, quickly responded to the scene.

Initial findings suggest that the incident was an industrial accident during a quality assurance process. Authorities have found no evidence of illegal activity or misconduct. The investigation is ongoing to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.
