The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially dismissed rumors suggesting the potential cancellation of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games due to the ongoing political crisis in France.
A Disinformation Campaign
According to Ziare French media reported on Thursday that the IOC denounced these rumors as part of a "current disinformation campaign against France."
In a press release, the IOC refuted claims that the Olympics might be canceled or postponed due to the dissolution of the National Assembly, anticipated legislative elections, and the risk of "civil war," a term used by President Emmanuel Macron in the podcast Generation Do It Yourself, as reported by the newspaper Ouest-France.
"This is evidently part of the ongoing disinformation campaign against France, the IOC, its president, and the Olympic Games. There is no factual basis for these claims. The IOC President and the entire Olympic Movement are eagerly looking forward to outstanding Olympic Games in Paris 2024, starting with the opening ceremony on July 26," the IOC responded on its official social media account.
Investigates Origin
French Minister of Sports and the Olympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, echoed this sentiment on social media, stating:
"Our Games will take place in Paris on the scheduled dates. We have been preparing for years; they will bring joy to the whole world and pride to our country."
The Paris 2024 organizing committee also issued a statement to dispel the false rumors.
"Paris 2024 has taken note of the circulation of false information regarding the cancellation of the Paris Games," the statement read. "Paris 2024 denies this information and requests that it not be disseminated. Paris 2024 will investigate the origin of this false information," emphasized the organizers.
