In a series of nighttime attacks, unknown individuals have sabotaged the fiber optic cables of several French Internet providers, causing widespread disruption.
According to Kurier, police sources confirmed on Monday that the affected providers include Free and SFR. The sabotage impacted six departments in the southwest, east, and north of France.
Notably, the capital Paris, where the Olympic Games are currently taking place, was spared.
The sabotage of fiber optic cables has disrupted Internet services for numerous users, adding to the chaos following similar attacks on Friday, which paralyzed large parts of French rail traffic.
The initial acts of sabotage on the day of the Olympic Games' opening ceremony affected hundreds of thousands of travelers, including athletes who missed the opening ceremony.
By the weekend, French rail traffic had gradually returned to normal. On Monday morning, Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete announced that all trains were operating "normally" again.
Authorities have intensified their investigation into these acts of sabotage.
Police sources revealed the arrest of a left-wing extremist on French railway premises in connection with the rail sabotage.
