Beloved actress Maggie Smith, known to millions as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, has passed away at the age of 89.

A Long and Wonderful Career

The British actress, whose career spanned decades, died in a hospital on Friday morning, surrounded by friends and family, according to a statement from her sons.

Smith’s role in Harry Potter was just one of many iconic characters she portrayed throughout her illustrious career. She was a two-time Academy Award winner, taking home Oscars for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978).

In addition to her work in Harry Potter, Maggie Smith became a household name for her portrayal of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the popular TV series Downton Abbey (2010–2015).

Fans also remember her for her role as the stern but caring Mother Superior in Sister Act (1992). Other notable works include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), A Room with a View (1985), and Gosford Park (2001), among others.

Knighted by Monarchy

Maggie Smith was born in Ilford, London, in 1934 and started her acting career on the theater stage before transitioning to film and television.

She was knighted by the British monarchy and held the title of "Dame" for her contributions to the arts. Her passing comes exactly one year after the death of her Harry Potter co-star Michael Gambon, who played Professor Dumbledore.

Maggie Smith’s legacy will continue to live on through her unforgettable performances, leaving behind an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
