On Saturday evening, the Israeli army conducted a targeted airstrike on Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip. The attack resulted in the killing of Rafa Salama, one of the leading commanders of the Hamas Brigade.

Details of the Strike

The Israeli military considers Salama primarily responsible for the October 7 massacre in Israel.

The airstrike was also targeted at Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas' military wing, but according to Hamas, he was not harmed.

"Mohammed Deif is fine and continues to command the resistance against the Israeli enemy," said Hamas official Ali Barakeh in Beirut.

Casualties and Injuries

As reported by Der Spiegel, besides the killing of the Hamas commander, the airstrike resulted in at least 90 deaths and around 300 injuries.

This operation occurred amidst ongoing ceasefire and hostage exchange negotiations conducted by the Israeli secret service Mossad in Doha. Although the talks were temporarily suspended after intensive negotiations, they are expected to continue soon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to meet with his advisers to discuss the status of the negotiations.

International Reactions

The attack has sparked international reactions.

A United Nations representative, Scott Anderson, described the horrific scenes at a hospital in Khan Yunis, where many patients had to be treated on the floor due to a lack of beds.

The situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense as the search for a lasting solution continues.
