A plane from the Russian airline Pobeda entered Lithuanian airspace without permission on the evening of June 30, remaining for about a minute.
The incident took place over the Baltic Sea, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Vilnius on Tuesday.
In response, Lithuania's Foreign Ministry summoned representatives from the Russian embassy, as reported by Die Presse.
They were presented with a formal note requesting an explanation from the relevant Russian authorities and urging measures to prevent future violations.
Context and Background
The airspace breach occurred as the plane was traveling from Moscow to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which borders Lithuania.
This incident is particularly sensitive because the European Union has closed its airspace to Russian aircraft as part of sanctions imposed in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
