Doubts over Nicolas Maduro's victory in Venezuela's presidential elections prompt the US to consider new sanctions.

Trending Now

The administration of US President Joe Biden is casting doubt on the recent electoral victory claimed by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

In response, the US is considering the introduction of new sanctions against Venezuela, as reported by Reuters.

American officials have expressed skepticism about the election results, which declared Maduro the winner.

They have called for the publication of a detailed vote count.

Independent exit polls indicated a victory for the opposition, with Maduro's main opponent, Edmundo Gonzalez, asserting that he was the true winner.

US officials, speaking anonymously, state that without the release of a detailed vote count, the international community would be reluctant to recognize the declared result.

While no specific new punitive measures were outlined, it was indicated that Washington would reassess its sanctions policy against Venezuela based on the actions of the Maduro regime in the coming period.

The presidential election in Venezuela was held on Sunday.

As votes were tallied, both incumbent President Nicolas Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez declared victory.
