Meta Blames Iranian Hackers for Attacks on US Officials' WhatsApp Accounts

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, recently revealed that an Iranian hacker group known as APT42 attempted to access the WhatsApp accounts of several high-profile diplomats and political figures in the United States.

Not only America was Targeted

Accorrding to Ziare this cyberattack not only targeted American officials but also aimed at influential individuals in Israel, Palestine, Iran, and the United Kingdom, according to an official statement from Meta.

APT42, also referred to as Mint Sandstorm, is notorious for its malicious cyber activities and has been repeatedly implicated in cyberattacks against high-value targets.

In response to this threat, Meta took swift action by suspending a small number of WhatsApp accounts identified as compromised or at risk of being accessed by hackers.

Politicians and Diplomats Affected

The targeted individuals include politicians and diplomats connected to both the current Biden administration and former President Donald Trump's administration.

This incident highlights the ongoing espionage efforts of APT42, which has faced accusations of similar attacks not only from Meta but also from other major tech companies like Microsoft and Google.

Meta condemned these attacks and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of its platforms and the security of its users.

The company is working closely with international authorities to further investigate the activities of this hacker group and to prevent future attacks.
