A distressing incident occurred in the village of Ugolsky in Russia's Volgograd region on the evening of July 12.
A 48-year-old man, who had recently returned from the war in Ukraine, opened fire on a group of children. The children, aged 9 to 13, were walking with a speaker playing music when the shooting happened.
This development was covered by Russian news outlet V1.
The Incident
The children passed by a house where the man, his brother (also a war veteran), and a woman were staying. The adults appeared to be celebrating.
According to local residents, the children turned off the music when they saw the adults coming outside. One of the girls heard the sound of a gun being reloaded, prompting the children to run away.
They ran to a neighboring house's fence, stopped when they saw no pursuers, and continued walking. Shots were then fired, causing the children to run again.
A 12-year-old boy felt pain in his left leg and stopped, noticing he was bleeding. He called his mother, who immediately contacted an ambulance. The boy suffered a through-and-through bullet wound and is currently hospitalized.
Police Response
The local police found cartridges from a carbine and a Makarov pistol at the scene.
According to the children, the shooter initially fired intermittent shots before switching to burst fire with the carbine. The police arrived an hour later but hesitated to enter the house, fearing more shots. Eventually, the shooter was detained.
Journalists confirmed that the shooter was a 48-year-old participant in the Ukraine invasion. V1.RU is withholding his name. The man reportedly confessed to the crime. Local authorities stated that he had returned home on vacation after being wounded.
