South Korean intelligence reports that North Korea has deployed more than 1,000 additional soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.

These troops, transferred to the front line in Russia’s Kursk region, mark a renewed North Korean presence in the conflict after a temporary withdrawal in January.

Pyongyang Ramps Up Troop Deployments

According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korean forces began returning to frontline positions in Kursk in early February.

Intelligence officials in Seoul estimate that between 1,000 and 3,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia since the start of the year, transported via Russian cargo ships and military aircraft.

Last year, North Korea sent approximately 11,000 troops to support Russia’s war effort. However, after suffering heavy casualties—at least 300 killed and 2,700 wounded—Pyongyang pulled its forces from combat in mid-January for regrouping and reinforcement.

South Korea’s intelligence agency continues to monitor North Korea’s growing involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine, including recent satellite images of increased activity at North Korea’s Rason port.

Analysts believe these movements suggest the transfer of military goods and equipment to Russia. Western officials have previously accused Pyongyang of supplying artillery shells, missiles, and other weapons to Moscow.
