Colonel General Kim Yong Bok, a high-ranking North Korean military officer, has been dispatched to lead 11,000 North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
From the Shadows to the Frontlines
Kim Yong Bok has maintained a low profile since serving as an aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Previously commanding a special forces unit of 200,000 soldiers, he is now tasked with integrating DPRK forces into the Russian military.
In his new role, Kim will oversee:
Combat integration of North Korean troops into Russian units.
Acquisition of battlefield experience for DPRK forces.
Strategic planning for future deployments.
Kim’s rise to prominence in the Korean People’s Army (KPA) was cemented after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June, where Kim was ranked as the third most prominent figure in North Korea’s military hierarchy.
A Growing Military Partnership
North Korea's involvement in Ukraine reflects the strengthening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow.
This collaboration comes after Putin ratified a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with North Korea, committing both nations to provide immediate military assistance if either faces an armed attack.
The Wall Street Journal also noted that Kim Yong Bok is not acting alone.
Other senior North Korean officials, including Major General Sin Kum Cheol and Colonel General Ri Chang Ho, have reportedly been tasked with commanding DPRK forces in Russia.
In October, Ukrainian representative Serhii Kyslytsia accused North Korea of actively supporting Russia’s war effort during a UN Security Council meeting.
