North Korea has conducted a strategic cruise missile test in the West Korean Strait, state media reported on February 25.
According to the Voice of Korea radio broadcast, the launch was carried out by a missile unit from the Korean People’s Army (KPA) in the country’s western region.
Kim Jong-un Personally Attends Missile Test
The test was personally overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, marking yet another high-profile military demonstration amid rising regional tensions.
According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, citing North Korean state media, the missile launch was aimed at demonstrating Pyongyang’s ability to counter “hostile forces” and maintain nuclear readiness.
Kim praised the launch, stating that ensuring “a powerful strike capability” is crucial to strengthening North Korea’s deterrence.
He also called for enhanced military readiness of his nuclear forces, according to North Korea’s KCNA news agency.
Growing Tensions in the Region
The missile test comes at a time of increasing friction between North Korea, South Korea, and the United States. Pyongyang has repeatedly accused Washington and Seoul of escalating tensions with joint military exercises and arms buildups.
North Korea’s continued missile tests—many of which involve nuclear-capable weapons—have drawn global condemnation. However, Kim Jong-un’s government has remained defiant, pushing ahead with weapons development despite strict international sanctions.
