North Korean soldiers are soon expected to arrive in the Kursk region to join ongoing combat operations and assist in protecting Russia’s border. This development was reported by The War Zone, citing Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
The first units of North Korean troops are set to deploy on October 23, 2024, to support Russian forces fighting against Ukraine’s Defense Forces in the region.
"We are expecting the first units tomorrow in the Kursk direction," Budanov told The War Zone.
When asked about the number of North Korean soldiers and how they would be equipped, Budanov replied, "We will see in a few days."
The news comes as South Korea takes a more active stance in supporting Ukraine, including sending military advisers and providing lethal weapons. This has raised concerns within South Korea about the potential threat posed by Russia's military cooperation with North Korea. As part of this cooperation, Russia may supply North Korea with advanced weapons, including armored vehicles and aircraft.
Kim Tae-hyo, South Korea’s deputy national security adviser, warned that if the illegal military collaboration between Russia and North Korea continues, South Korea will respond decisively in coordination with the international community.
Reports have also surfaced that North Korean pilots are being trained in Russia to operate Russian combat aircraft. Sources suggest that this training might be in exchange for North Korea's military support in the war against Ukraine, with new aircraft possibly being supplied to North Korea as part of the deal.
The North Korean military's involvement follows President Vladimir Putin’s recent call for the State Duma to ratify a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with North Korea, marking a deepening of military ties between the two nations.
