The Norwegian government is stepping up its defense spending in a big way, announcing a NOK 19.2 billion ($1.8 billion) increase for 2025.

That’s a 21.2% jump compared to this year, bringing the total defense budget to NOK 110.1 billion (about $10.3 billion).

This move exceeds NATO’s defense spending goals, with Norway set to spend 2.16% of its GDP on its military.

Why the Big Increase?

Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram says the world has become less secure, and Norway needs to be ready to protect itself and its allies.

“With this budget proposal, we are taking greater responsibility for both our own security and the security of our allies,” Gram explained in a government press release.

This boost is part of Norway’s long-term defense plan, approved earlier this year.

Where’s the Money Going?

The extra funding will go towards a few key areas:

  • More Troops: By the end of 2025, Norway will add 300 new military personnel, 400 conscripts, and 600 reservists.

  • Better Equipment: More ammunition, better training, and upgrades to the F-35 fighter jets, new submarines, helicopters, and surveillance systems.

  • Improved Living Conditions: The funds will also help improve living conditions for military personnel and boost the strength of the Norwegian Home Guard.

  • Officer Training: Norway plans to expand its officer training program by adding 50 more spots, along with efforts to attract and retain more soldiers.

On September 21, it was reported that the Norwegian Coast Guard had adopted the Jan Mayen-class offshore patrol vessel Hopen.
