Russia and Turkey have strongly condemned the reported killing of Ismail Haniya, the top leader of Hamas, in Iran.
The news has sparked outrage across the region, with various governments blaming Israel for the attack, though Israel has not commented on the incident.
Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the United States and the European Union, has accused Israel of carrying out the assassination.
TV4 Nyheterna reports that the group has vowed that the killing will not go unanswered, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.
Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the killing as a "shameful murder" and accused Israel of attempting to escalate the Gaza conflict into a regional war. This comes after Turkey had already issued threats to Israel over the situation.
Russia also condemned the attack, labeling it an "unacceptable political murder." Moscow warned that tensions in the region are likely to increase as a result of the killing.
Iran, a long-time supporter of Hamas, also reacted strongly. Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani stated that Haniya's death would only serve to "strengthen the deep and indissoluble bond" between Iran and Palestine, as well as the broader resistance movement, according to the state-run Mehr news agency.
Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels also condemned the killing, calling it a "terrorist crime."
