A major aviation accident occurred near Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., when a passenger plane carrying 64 people collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, according to reports from CNN and NBC.

The incident took place as American Airlines Flight 5342 was approaching the runway after departing from Wichita, Kansas. The White House has confirmed that a military helicopter was involved in the collision.

Emergency crews have launched a large-scale response effort in the Potomac River area, where the crash occurred.

So far, the Washington Police Department has stated that there are no confirmed casualties, though the situation is still developing.

According to NBC, at least four survivors have been transported to Reagan National Airport for medical evaluation. It remains unclear whether all passengers and crew members have been accounted for.

As a result of the incident, all flights at Reagan National Airport have been suspended until further notice.

Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense, are currently investigating the cause of the mid-air collision.
