Denmark's largest international airport, Copenhagen Airport, temporarily shut down its airspace early Wednesday morning after a dramatic police chase ended with a suspect crashing through a security fence and fleeing onto airport grounds.

The incident began when a man, driving a stolen Swedish-registered Land Rover, refused to stop for police.

As reported by state media DR, the high-speed chase stretched through Copenhagen, passing through Amagerbrogade and Amager Landevej, before the suspect lost control and crashed into a fence near Flyvergrillen, a restaurant located next to the airport’s runways.

According to Copenhagen Police Chief Michael Andersen, the crash happened around 3:30 a.m., and the man fled on foot into restricted airport territory. The breach forced authorities to close the airspace while police searched for the suspect.

By early morning, Copenhagen Airport confirmed that airspace had been reopened, though heightened security measures remain in place.

Authorities believe the suspect is no longer within the airport area, but investigations are ongoing. At this time, police have not released details about the man's identity or motive.

For travelers, the impact is expected to be minimal.

Flights are operating as usual, though increased security and a larger police presence can be expected throughout the day, according to Lise Aggerley Kürstein, Communications Director at Copenhagen Airport.

Copenhagen Airport and Copenhagen Police are evaluating the incident.
