Portugal is prepared to participate in a European-led peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but only if a formal ceasefire is in place, according to Defense Minister Nuno Melo, who spoke in a radio interview with Renascença on March 13.

“We are prepared to contribute to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, provided there is a cessation of hostilities,” Melo stated.

Discussions are currently underway among European allies about the potential structure, mandate, and composition of such a mission.

Portugal’s statement comes as other European nations signal similar intentions.

In Germany, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Berlin would be open to deploying German forces as part of a broader effort to support a peace deal, emphasizing that Germany backs initiatives aimed at long-term peace in the region.

Denmark has also expressed readiness. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed that Denmark could commit troops if the situation develops in a direction where peacekeeping becomes feasible.

Canada Weighs In

Beyond Europe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted earlier that Canada is considering all options to support peace in Ukraine, including potentially sending troops.

No concrete deployments have been made at this stage, as all parties have tied their participation to the achievement of a formal ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
