Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed deep condolences over the sudden death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically perished in a helicopter crash over the weekend.
"Outstanding Politician and True Friend"
"Sayyid Ibrahim Raisi was an outstanding politician whose whole life was devoted to serving his country," read the message published on the Kremlin's website.
Putin emphasized Raisi's role as a "true friend of Russia," noting his significant personal contributions to fostering strong bilateral relations.
"He made great efforts to elevate these ties to the level of strategic partnership," Putin added.
Tragedy in Iran
The news of Raisi's death was confirmed by Iranian officials early Monday after rescue teams discovered his helicopter wreckage in a fog-covered mountainous region in Western Iran. This incident has plunged the nation into mourning.
"The servant of the Iranian nation, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, has achieved the highest level of martyrdom while serving the people," announced Iranian state television, accompanied by images of Raisi and a recitation of the Quran.
Ebrahim Raisi, 63, had served as Iran's president since 2021. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including widespread protests, a severe economic crisis exacerbated by U.S. sanctions, and ongoing tensions with Israel.
