The Romanian Senate has approved two bills granting the military the authority to shoot down unauthorized drones and regulate military operations on Romanian soil during peacetime.

The decisive vote took place on February 26, according to Radio Svoboda.

The bill on national airspace control passed with 78 votes in favor, 11 against, and 2 abstentions.

A second bill, which establishes the framework for military missions and operations within Romania, was approved with 80 votes in favor, 12 against, and 2 abstentions.

“Strengthening Romania’s defense! (…) The first law regulates the shooting down of unauthorized drones that violate Romanian airspace. The second law allows for more effective cooperation between the Romanian army and NATO partners on national territory, in military missions and operations in peacetime,” the acting head of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean, wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has begun using FPV drones to intercept and destroy Russian Shahed drones, an approach that has already demonstrated effectiveness.

Romania’s legislative move reflects growing regional security concerns, particularly as drone warfare continues to play a critical role in modern conflicts.
