Alexei Zhuravlev, deputy chairman of the State Duma's defense committee, has suggested granting Russian citizenship to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who reportedly sought asylum in Russia following his ousting.
“Russia has always treated its allies humanely, even when they face defeat,” Zhuravlev stated, as reported by the Moscow Times.
He referenced similar instances, such as former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was granted asylum in Russia after being exiled in 2014.
Zhuravlev emphasized Assad’s contributions to Russia, stating: “Assad has done much for Russia despite the current circumstances. If Yanukovych received citizenship, why not Assad?”
Reports suggest Assad and his family have acquired assets in Russia, including 19 apartments worth $40 million in the high-end Moscow-City complex. These properties were allegedly purchased through offshore companies.
Other political figures have sought refuge in Russia, including ex-leaders from Kyrgyzstan and Yugoslavia.
The Fall of Damascus
The proposal comes after Syrian opposition forces announced the overthrow of Assad on December 8. The capture of Damascus marked the end of over five decades of authoritarian rule by the Assad dynasty.
While Assad’s current location remains unconfirmed, sources indicate he has sought refuge in Moscow, where Russian officials are reportedly deliberating his future status.
