Bruno Kahl, the head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has issued a serious warning about Russia’s military ambitions, suggesting that the country could be capable of launching an attack on NATO territory by 2030.
Speaking during a parliamentary hearing on October 14, Kahl outlined the growing threat posed by Russia, which he believes is preparing for potential aggressive actions against the alliance.
Kahl stated that by the end of the decade, Russia’s armed forces may be ready to target NATO, viewing Germany as a key adversary.
He pointed out that Germany is seen this way due to its role as the second-largest supporter of Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
“We are in direct conflict with Russia,” Kahl noted, explaining that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine.
Putin, according to Kahl, is focused on reshaping the global order and sees the West, particularly NATO, as a barrier to those goals.
He also highlighted the increasing use of coercive tactics by Russian intelligence services, warning that they are becoming more aggressive and unhesitant.
Kahl called for greater support for German security services, urging policymakers to provide the resources and authority needed to effectively counter these growing threats. He also warned of potential further escalation in tensions between Russia and NATO.
Earlier, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur had also raised concerns about the possibility of a Russian attack on NATO, citing recent incidents involving Russian drone debris in Romania and missile strikes that entered Polish airspace.
