Roskomnadzor, Russia's media regulator, has issued a threat of fines against Google and Opera Software over their alleged facilitation of internet censorship circumvention tools.

Government Dissatisfaction and Demands

Roskomnadzor expressed dissatisfaction with content available through Google and Opera browsers.

He was dissatisfied that the browsers instructs users on bypassing internet restrictions.

The regulator has demanded that access to these plugins be restricted immediately.

Potential Financial Penalties

If Google and Opera fail to comply with Roskomnadzor's directives, they could face fines.

Russian media reports that those fines could be as high as 4 million rubles (approximately $50,000 USD).

If the two companies repeated violations that could lead to fines amounting to up to 1/10 of the companies' total annual revenue.
