Russian shelling of key power lines has once again brought Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant close to a dangerous blackout.

On October 1, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), currently under Russian occupation, faced the threat of a blackout once again due to Russian shelling of the power lines that supply the plant.

This was reported by Energoatom.

The Russian attack targeted a main substation, severing one of the power lines connected to the ZNPP.

“Another act of Russian terrorism has created the risk of an accident at the ZNPP. We demand the immediate implementation of the IAEA resolution and the return of the occupied nuclear power plant to Ukrainian control. Safe operation of the ZNPP is only possible under Ukraine’s management,” said Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko.

Ukraine’s energy workers are actively working to mitigate the effects of the Russian attack and restore full power to the occupied plant as quickly as possible.

The ZNPP has been under Russian occupation since March 4, 2022.

During this time, Russian forces have repeatedly violated nuclear safety protocols by restricting access to qualified personnel and cutting the plant off from the Ukrainian power grid.
