Boris Maksudov, a military correspondent for the Russian state television channel Rossiya 24, has died following a drone attack in Ukraine. This incident adds to the growing list of journalists who have become casualties in the ongoing conflict.
According to Ria.ru, Maksudov's death was announced by Vladimir Solovyov, a prominent presenter on the state-controlled network. Initially, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Maksudov had been wounded in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening at the time.
Dmitry Kiselyov, CEO of the Russian media group Rossia Segodnia, honored Maksudov's bravery, stating he "died a hero's death, like a brave fighter." Maria Zakharova, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, also extended her condolences.
The Zaporizhzhia region, where Maksudov was injured, is one of four Ukrainian territories that Russia claimed to have annexed last year, despite not having full control over any of them.
The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that at least 15 media workers, including Maksudov, have been killed in Ukraine since the onset of Moscow's 'military operations' in February last year. Among these was AFP video journalist Arman Soldin, who was killed near Bakhmut, a town in eastern Ukraine that was later captured by Russian forces after intense fighting.
