A Russian airstrike has mistakenly hit the city of Lgov in the Kursk region, a territory currently under Russian control.
The incident was confirmed after Russian propagandists released footage showing the aftermath of the strike, which included a massive crater near the Volna local sports and recreation center on Tytova Street.
Despite the clear evidence of a large-caliber bomb, Russian state media initially blamed the Armed Forces of Ukraine, claiming the damage was caused by a downed GMLRS missile.
According to Militarmyi, the size of the crater and the circumstances surrounding the event strongly suggest that the explosion was the result of a Russian airstrike.
This is not the first time that Russian forces have accidentally dropped bombs on their own cities or territories under their control.
Reports indicate that over the past four months, Russia has dropped at least 110 bombs on its own or temporarily occupied areas in Ukraine.
Many of these accidents have been attributed to technical malfunctions or errors made by the crews of Russian aircraft.
The modified bombs, equipped with UMPK kits, have been prone to abnormal triggering, leading to unintended strikes on Russian soil. The high number of tactical aircraft sorties that fly over Russia further increases the likelihood of such incidents.
One of the most notable cases occurred in April 2023, when a Russian Su-34 fighter bomber accidentally dropped two bombs on the city of Belgorod. The bombs landed in a densely populated area, causing significant damage and raising concerns about the operational safety of Russian military forces.
