A senior Russian general was killed in a car bombing near Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Thursday.
State media reported that a car exploded in the courtyard of a residential building in Balashikha, a city in Moscow Oblast, killing one person.
The Investigative Committee later identified the victim as Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy chief of the main operations directorate of Russia’s army.
“According to available data, the explosion occurred as a result of the detonation of a homemade explosive device,” the committee said in a statement. A criminal investigation has been opened.

Little is publicly known about Moskalik. He was listed as part of Russia’s delegation during the 2015 Normandy Format talks aimed at resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty also reported that Moskalik took part in the 2019 Normandy Four summit and in earlier talks with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
