Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced his intention to restore "normal" relations with Russia if the war in Ukraine concludes during his time in office.
Speaking to local media outlets Aktuality and Denník N on October 3, Fico emphasized the importance of mending economic and political ties between the European Union and Russia.
"The EU needs Russia, and of course, Russia needs the EU," Fico stated.
Fico stressed that all wars end through negotiations and that Ukraine should remain a vital transit country for Europe's resources.
He also shared his aim to maintain "friendly relations" with Ukraine while advocating for diplomatic solutions rather than military ones to resolve the conflict.
The Slovak leader referenced Czech President Petr Pavel's alleged shift in stance, claiming that Pavel suggested Ukraine should prepare for compromise in the ongoing war.
Fico’s remarks follow earlier tensions between Slovakia and Ukraine after Kyiv condemned his previous comments about alleged Nazi elements in Ukraine’s military.
