Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has strongly opposed the idea of sending Spanish troops to Ukraine. Speaking to EFE on Monday, Robles emphasized that such a move could escalate the conflict.
According to the EFE news agency, the Defense Minister expressed concerns that the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine might provoke further escalation.
"We need to proceed cautiously to avoid such escalation," she remarked.
Robles recalled that from the very beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, NATO stated the importance of avoiding such escalation.
While Spain is against sending troops, the Defense Minister acknowledged the positions of other European countries that have not ruled out deploying their military personnel to Ukraine for training purposes.
Madrid respects these decisions but does not intend to follow suit.
