Despite Donald Trump's threats not to defend NATO countries that do not spend at least two percent of their gross national product on defense as agreed, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg believes that the United States has a significant interest in maintaining the defense alliance.
Moreover, he suggests that Donald Trump himself would want to keep the US in NATO if he were to reclaim the presidency in November.
"The US has never fought a war alone. From Korea to Afghanistan, it has always stood together with other countries," he stated, according to NATO's official website,
"I am confident that NATO will remain the strongest alliance in history and that the US will remain a part of NATO."
The statement comes a day after Jens Stoltenberg spoke on the same topic, highlighting the importance of the USA for Europe's security. He mentioned that Europe is dependent on the support it receives from NATO countries that are not part of Europe.
