On January 15, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised the "strongest action possible" if reports of an Australian national being executed by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine are verified, CNN reports.

Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old biology teacher from Melbourne, was reportedly captured by Russian forces in December. Ukrainian sources told 7News that Jenkins’ body has been found, suggesting he was executed while in captivity.

Australia's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador to demand answers and emphasize adherence to international law. Albanese expressed deep concern over the situation and said his government is seeking "urgent clarification."

"If there has been any harm caused to Oscar Jenkins, that is absolutely reprehensible," Albanese said.

He did not specify what actions Australia might take but promised a strong response if the execution is confirmed.

Shocking Video and Accusations

In December, Russian Telegram channels circulated a video showing Jenkins in military clothing. The footage, described as distressing, depicted Jenkins being interrogated and beaten.

He introduced himself as a teacher who had joined Ukraine to help in its fight against Russian aggression. Jenkins mentioned he was stationed near Kramatorsk in Donetsk Oblast, close to the front line.

Russia has often been accused of violating international laws that protect prisoners of war (POWs).

Under the Geneva Conventions, POWs must be treated humanely, and executions are classified as war crimes. However, Moscow denies such protections to foreign volunteers, labeling them "mercenaries."

If confirmed, Jenkins' execution would be the first case of an Australian volunteer fighter being executed by Russian forces since the start of the full-scale invasion. At least six Australians have died while fighting for Ukraine.

The Australian government and Ukrainian authorities are actively investigating Jenkins' fate.
