German authorities have identified three more suspects linked to a violent attack on Mathias Ekke, a leading candidate from Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party in the upcoming European elections.
This development was reported by Spiegel.
The Saxony Land Office of Criminal Police and the Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office issued a joint statement revealing that the total number of suspects now stands at four. All suspects are German nationals between the ages of 17 and 18.
Their homes were recently searched as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred on the evening of May 3 in Dresden's Streisen district, where Ekke and his team were distributing campaign materials. Ekke was severely beaten by the assailants, requiring hospitalization and surgery.
In response to the attack, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a collective stand against right-wing extremism. The assault not only shocked the nation but also led to large-scale demonstrations in both Dresden and Berlin.
