Diplomatic efforts with North Korea have long been a challenge for the United States.

For decades, multiple administrations have attempted to negotiate with Pyongyang, hoping to curb its nuclear ambitions.

Progress has been limited, with talks often breaking down due to North Korea’s refusal to abandon its weapons program.

Now, with Donald Trump back in the White House, he appears eager to reopen communication with Kim Jong Un.

'A Smart Guy'

During an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that he plans to resume contact with the North Korean leader.

When asked by Sean Hannity whether he would reach out to Kim, Trump responded, "Yes, I will."

He described Kim as "a smart guy" and reaffirmed that their past relationship had been positive, according to Ziare.

Trump made history in 2018 by becoming the first sitting U.S. president to meet with a member of the Kim dynasty.

Their first summit in Singapore was followed by a second meeting in Hanoi in 2019, which ended without an agreement.

Later that year, Trump and Kim met again at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea.

Despite these meetings, nuclear negotiations stalled, with the last formal talks taking place in Stockholm in October 2019.

While Trump remains optimistic about rekindling diplomacy, Marco Rubio, his nominee for Secretary of State, has taken a more cautious approach.

Just last week, Rubio referred to Kim as a "dictator" and acknowledged that North Korea sees nuclear weapons as essential for its survival.

He noted that sanctions have failed to deter Pyongyang’s weapons development, but credited Trump’s first term with halting missile tests for a period.

During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed that Kim Jong Un wanted him back in the White House.

He has also boasted about the personal letters exchanged between them, stating that Kim "told him everything".
