The United States has halted all military aid to Ukraine, President Donald Trump announced, stating that Kyiv must now rely on its existing stockpiles until Washington and Moscow reach a peace agreement.
"Right now, we're not providing anything," Trump told reporters at the White House, as broadcast by Fox News.
He insisted that the previously supplied military aid should be sufficient for Ukraine to continue fighting until a diplomatic resolution is reached.
“We need a [peace] agreement. Otherwise, everything will continue,” Trump emphasized.
While Trump made it clear that U.S. support is currently frozen, he hinted at the possibility of resuming military aid if peace talks fail, adding, “We'll see. Right now, we're in the process of negotiations.”
He also revealed that discussions with Russia have intensified, mentioning his recent phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, whom he claimed “wants to settle everything.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Western officials estimate that Ukraine can sustain the current level of fighting until the summer before its ammunition supplies run critically low.
If U.S. assistance does not resume, Kyiv will be forced to ramp up domestic production and seek increased military support from Europe.
A Western military official told WSJ that Ukraine currently produces about 55% of its military hardware, while 20% has come from the United States and 25% from Europe since the start of the war. However, replacing U.S.-supplied Patriot air defense systems, surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, and long-range ATACMS missiles in the short term is not feasible.
Trump Shifts Responsibility to Europe
The American president also indicated that going forward, Europe will have to take on greater responsibility for arming Ukraine. His comments align with previous statements urging European nations to increase their contributions to Kyiv’s defense.
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, Washington has not announced any new military aid packages for Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the lack of U.S. support poses a serious challenge on the battlefield, further complicating Ukraine’s position in the war.
