U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has said that Denmark should give up Greenland to the United States, arguing that the island is crucial for U.S. national security and protecting freedom worldwide.

"People don’t even know if Denmark has full legal rights to Greenland, but if it does, Denmark should give it up because we need Greenland for national security, for the protection of the free world," Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Trump explained that Greenland is strategically important, pointing out that Chinese and Russian ships are often seen in the area.

"You don’t even need binoculars to see them from the shore," he added.

This isn’t the first time Trump has shown interest in Greenland becoming part of the U.S. Earlier on Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. and members of the president-elect’s team visited the island, raising speculation about plans to explore its potential acquisition.
