The peaceful town of Southport in northwest England was shattered by a horrific knife attack on Monday. The incident resulted in the deaths of two children and left nine others injured, six of whom are in critical condition.
Two adults were also seriously injured in the attack.
Die Presse reports that a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigators have stated that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act. Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed that the suspect, who hails from the nearby suburb of Banks, was apprehended and a knife was confiscated.
Police were called to a house in a quiet residential area at around 11 a.m. local time.
The house was hosting a children's dance class set to music by US singer Taylor Swift.
"The attacker entered the building armed with a knife and attacked the children," Chief Constable Kennedy told journalists.
Adults present at the scene tried to protect the children, but "all of the injured suffered stab wounds."
Dave Kitchin, head of the emergency services, described the crime scene as "devastating" and indicated that the attack will leave "permanent marks" on the community.
