Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have drafted a bill that could authorize President-elect Donald Trump to begin negotiations for the purchase of Greenland, Reuters reports, citing a copy of the document.
The "Make Greenland Great Again Act"
The bill, titled the Make Greenland Great Again Act, echoes Trump’s famous campaign slogan, Make America Great Again.
According to Reuters, Republicans are working to gather sufficient support for the proposal. If passed, the legislation would allow Trump to initiate talks with Denmark immediately after his inauguration.
The bill specifies: "Congress hereby authorizes the President, beginning at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Time on January 20, 2025, to attempt to negotiate with the Kingdom of Denmark to secure the acquisition of Greenland by the United States."
It also requires Trump to submit any agreement with Denmark, along with supporting materials, to the relevant congressional committees within five days of reaching a deal.
Trump's Renewed Interest in Greenland
Trump first proposed the idea of acquiring Greenland during his initial term as president.
Following his 2024 election victory, he revived the proposal, citing national security and global freedom as key reasons for the acquisition.
But Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, firmly responded that Greenland is "not for sale."
Egede has previously advocated for Greenland’s independence from Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also rejected the idea of selling Greenland, emphasizing her commitment to preserving the kingdom's integrity but acknowledging Greenland's desire for independence as "legitimate and understandable."
The proposal has also sparked international attention.
The Kremlin announced it is closely monitoring developments, as the Arctic—where Greenland is located—falls within Russia's sphere of national interest.
Moscow expressed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
