The United Kingdom is looking into the possibility of building military bases and defense facilities in Ukraine as part of a new 100-year partnership agreement between the two countries.
The plan, detailed in a press release published by the British government, aims to boost Ukraine’s long-term defense capabilities.
The agreement mentions the potential for establishing military bases, logistics centers, equipment storage facilities, and reserve stockpiles. These facilities would strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and could also be used by the UK if a major military threat arises.
Under the agreement, the UK has committed to providing at least £3 billion in military aid to Ukraine annually until 2030-2031, with further support promised as needed. The partnership also includes plans to cooperate on advanced military technology, such as long-range strike systems, air and missile defense, and the storage of complex weapons.
The partnership was signed on January 16 during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that it also includes a secret section.
"The agreement includes cooperation on economic, technological, and educational projects, such as developing schools and universities with British support. The secret part focuses on measures to strengthen our stability and development," Zelensky said.
Additional Defense Contributions
During his visit, Starmer announced further military aid, including new artillery and a mobile air defense system called Grateful. He also pledged that the UK’s support in 2025 would surpass previous years.
Reports indicate that Starmer and Zelensky also discussed deploying international peacekeeping forces in Ukraine once the war ends.
But, as The Telegraph noted, the UK has not yet committed to sending troops to Ukraine, as such a move could heighten tensions with Russia.
