Ukraine has proposed holding a summit in Rome on April 26 as world leaders gather for the funeral of Pope Francis, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

The proposal, made through diplomatic channels, suggests using the visit of international leaders to the Vatican as an opportunity to meet under the “Quint” format.

This group includes the United States, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and potentially Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to attend the funeral and may hold bilateral talks during his visit, the report said.

However, the timing of the proposed summit has raised concerns among some countries, particularly Italy. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cited logistical difficulties, especially if U.S. President Donald Trump attends with a large delegation.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also expressed caution.

La Repubblica reported that Italian officials are concerned the summit may carry reputational risks if it ends without clear outcomes.

Despite these concerns, Ukraine remains eager to proceed with the meeting. Diplomats say the situation is still developing, and the summit’s likelihood remains uncertain.

Trump is expected to arrive in Rome on April 25 and may hold separate meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. A meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Meloni is also under discussion, though none of the meetings have been officially confirmed.

Potential locations for these talks include the Villa Taverna, the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Rome, for informal meetings. A more formal venue may be arranged by Italian authorities if necessary.

Zelenskyy will attend the Pope’s funeral on April 26, accompanied by First Lady Olena Zelenska, according to presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn.
