The US Congress does not plan to approve more financial aid for Ukraine anytime soon, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson.
According to a report by Reuters, Johnson said there is “no appetite” for further funding and that the war needs to come to an end.
Republicans Push Back on Ukraine Support
Johnson also claimed that US allies in Europe agree that the war has gone on for too long.
His statement comes as Donald Trump continues to criticize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump recently called Zelenskyy a “dictator” and blamed him for rejecting a US deal on rare earth minerals.
Trump has also argued that the US has already given too much aid to Ukraine and that the war “cannot be won”.
US Weapons Shipments to Ukraine Delayed
At the same time, Ukraine is facing problems getting weapons from the US. Roman Kostenko, a top official in Ukraine’s parliament, said that some American companies have stopped sending weapons while waiting for new decisions from Washington.
However, the US government is still providing other types of aid, and logistical support has not stopped. US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz admitted that weapons shipments have slowed down, as many of the US military’s stockpiles are running low.
Zelenskyy has said before that Ukraine cannot hold off Russia without US support. Since 2014, the US has given nearly $70 billion in military aid, including $66 billion since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Now, with Congress unwilling to approve more funding, Trump pushing for a quick resolution, and weapons supplies running low, Ukraine’s ability to keep fighting Russia is uncertain.
