White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced that the United States is set to introduce new sanctions targeting Iran's missile and drone programs. This decision comes in response to Iran's recent large-scale attack on Israel.
Details of the Sanctions
According to Sullivan, the upcoming sanctions will specifically target Iran's military capabilities.
"In the coming days, the United States will introduce new sanctions against Iran, covering its missile and drone programs, as well as new sanctions against organizations that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran's Ministry of Defense."
President Joe Biden is actively coordinating with international partners, including G7 countries and bipartisan leaders in Congress, to formulate a comprehensive response to the Iranian aggression. Sullivan stated that these efforts include strengthening air and missile defense systems and enhancing early warning capabilities across the Middle East.
House Republicans have initiated multiple legislative actions this week, proposing bills that would impose further sanctions on Iran and its proxies. These measures are a direct reaction to Iran's attack on Israel and aim to significantly tighten the economic pressure on Tehran.
Global Response
Sullivan also expressed anticipation that U.S. allies and partners will soon introduce their own sanctions against Iran.
Parallel to the U.S. actions, the European Union's foreign ministers have agreed to expand their sanctions regime related to Iran's military assistance to Russia.
Reports from the Financial Times indicate that the EU is also discussing new sanctions in response to Iran's aggressive actions in the Middle East.
