The World Health Organization (WHO) has voiced its apprehensions about the trajectory of COVID-19 as the winter season approaches in the Northern Hemisphere.

The announcement was made by WHO on social media platform X, following a press conference held on Wednesday.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, elaborated on his concerns, stating that there has been an uptick in fatalities in parts of the Middle East and Asia.

Additionally, the number of patients requiring intensive care is increasing in some European regions.

During the press conference, the Director-General also highlighted the scarcity of data related to the coronavirus. He urged for enhanced surveillance measures to be put in place.

According to WHO, only 43 out of its 194 member countries are reporting death statistics, and a mere 20 countries are providing data on hospital admissions.

Vaccination urgency

The Director-General emphasized the importance of not delaying the next recommended vaccine dose.

"If a subsequent dose is advised for you, do not hesitate to get it," he stated during the press conference.
