Millions of Americans along the East Coast are bracing for severe winter weather, with snow, ice, and freezing rain expected through Monday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings affecting over 60 million people, while governors in Kentucky and Virginia have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

A Multifaceted Winter Threat

“This storm is still developing,” said Rich Bann, a meteorologist at the NWS Weather Prediction Center, on Saturday evening, according to Ziare.

“But it poses multiple hazards, from heavy snowfall across the plains to icy conditions further south that could make roads treacherous.”

Southern Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee are forecasted to experience freezing rain and ice on Sunday, creating hazardous driving conditions and potential power outages.

“In some areas, driving will be nearly impossible,” Bann warned.

The storm has already caused significant disruptions.

Kansas City International Airport in Missouri temporarily closed Saturday afternoon due to rapidly accumulating ice, according to local authorities.

As the storm intensifies, snowfall is expected to blanket large portions of the eastern U.S., while freezing rain may coat infrastructure in southern regions, exacerbating travel challenges and power grid vulnerabilities.

The storm is forecasted to move across the East Coast and exit into the Atlantic by late Monday.

While conditions may vary, residents in affected areas are advised to prepare for power outages, icy roads, and possible delays to transportation and services.

Meteorologists are urging caution and advising against unnecessary travel in areas under weather advisories. Emergency response teams are on standby as local authorities work to mitigate the storm’s impact.
