Shortly after US President Joe Biden annonuced taht he would not seek re-election in the upcomming presidential race, the Ukrainian President took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his reaction to the news.
In his statement, Volodymyr Zelensky primarily thanked Biden for his steadfast support and leadership.
"On behalf of Ukraine, I thank President Biden for his steadfast support during our fight for freedom," Zelenskyy wrote.
"We will always be grateful for President Biden's leadership. He supported our country at the most dramatic moment in history, helped us prevent Putin's occupation of our country, and continues to support us throughout this terrible war," he continued.
Zelensky also emphasized the need for the US to keep showing strong leadership to stop Russian aggression.
British and German leaders also acknowledged Biden's achievements and thanked him for his cooperation.
In contrast, former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump reacted with mockery and insults, stating on Truth Social that Biden "cannot" continue to work in office.
Last Friday, Zelensky and Trump had their first phone call in years.
Trump said he wants to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table and "bring peace to the world." Zelenskyy mentioned that they agreed to meet in person to discuss steps for a fair and lasting peace.
