Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a key figure in Republican politics over the past 50 years, has announced that he will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, rejecting former President Donald Trump.

Trump Unfit for Office

Cheney declared Trump unfit for office, saying, "Donald Trump can never be trusted with power again," according to a report by ABC News.

Cheney's comments mark a significant break from his party, which has largely aligned itself with Trump since his presidency.

"In our 248-year history, no individual has posed a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He attempted to steal the last election using lies and violence to stay in power after voters rejected him," Cheney said.

The former vice president emphasized the need for Americans to prioritize the Constitution above party loyalty, explaining why he intends to vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. "Each of us has a duty to put the country above partisanship to defend our Constitution," he added.

A Danger to Democracy

His statement comes shortly after his daughter, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, publicly revealed his voting intentions. In an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival, Liz Cheney said her father believes that Trump is a serious danger to American democracy, according to Hotnews.

Both Dick and Liz Cheney have been outspoken critics of Trump, particularly following the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Dick Cheney, 83, served as vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. His daughter, Liz, lost her Wyoming primary election in 2022 to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman by a wide margin.
