Nearly three years into the war in Ukraine, efforts to reach a resolution remain elusive.
As the conflict continues, Western allies are reinforcing their commitment to diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia.
As reported by Digi24, the European Union and the United States have agreed on the need to maintain “maximum pressure” on Moscow to achieve a lasting peace.
The decision was made during a phone call between EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking their first official conversation.
Diplomatic and Economic Pressures
The discussion came amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Europe, with President Donald Trump recently threatening tariffs on European goods and demanding that EU nations increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP.
Despite these disputes, Kallas emphasized the importance of continued transatlantic cooperation, including increased European defense investments.
Both officials also highlighted the need for greater coordination on Middle East stability and challenges posed by China, reflecting a broader geopolitical strategy beyond Ukraine.
Uncertainty in U.S. Policy on Ukraine
While the U.S. remains Ukraine’s largest military backer, Trump has frequently criticized aid to Kyiv and sent mixed signals on future support. However, he has also recently warned Moscow of additional sanctions if no peace deal is reached.
Kallas previously stated that the EU is prepared to “take the lead” in supporting Ukraine if U.S. backing diminishes, though she remains confident that Washington will maintain its commitments.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether sustained Western pressure can push Russia toward a negotiated settlement.
